The Beach

I had a big trip this summer to Guatemala with Mac, Nick and Spencer.  LOTS of learning took place.

This town we stayed in was called El Paredon and the roads were actually just black sand paths.  We slept in a bamboo bungalow and turned into crazy people beneath a full moon on a black sand beach.  Spencer, Mac and Nick are the ultimate chillers.  When I was worried about when we would find the next bathroom and being extorted by cops, they were smooth sailing.  I wish I could powder them and put them in a pill to take whenever I feel too tight.

I wrote about my trip to Guatemala in one of my writing classes and there were two Spanish speakers in my class who were shocked by the name El Paredon.  Translated, it means a firing squad wall.

This is where all the magic happened.  Rum + Hammocks = CRAZY ACROBATICS!!!

This is was a bad dog.  It attacked a neighbor's baby chicken and the owner of our little camp whacked it with a stick and then used black magic to bring the chick back to life.

This summer I saw a pink sand beach and a black sand beach.  Black sand beaches totally win.  That shit's dramatic!!

Ferry boat.

None of us could really handle this bird.  It was enormous and angry.  We danced around it taking pictures and being scared and then this little ten year old girl shows up and takes charge and made us look like big babies.  Guatemala is pretty street in that regard.

I like this picture because we all look so relaxed, but the truth was, we were being annihilated by mosquitoes.  Like, I think I recall Spencer run screaming back to our room saying he couldn't take it anymore.  Some how a rumor started that if you got one hundred mosquito bites, you die - so things were tense as our trip wore on...there was a lot of counting...

Look at them!  I'm sure I was kind of a nutcase to deal with - I'm not a dawdler and I like to stick to the plan, but I would go on another trip with these guys any time if they would take me.  This was a super special week.

Old Rocks

I loved these post ice-agey rocks in Maine.  These pictures can't really do them justice, but up close, the rock actually looked like petrified wood.  Thanks geology!

12 Miles Uphill Both Ways Without Power, Running Water and Heat

Long story short, the same wind that bent the above saplings robbed us of power, water and heat for two nights this weekend. We survived off random stuff like left over high-fiber Triscuits, a tray of ice cubes and some Whiskey. Wind is totally fucked up. Along with downing trees and power lines, it also gives sensitive skin unsightly burns and can really mess up bangs, hair, outfits - basically your whole life.

Anne - where is your mind in this picture, little lamb? The Caribbean? A power plant?

Franconia, NH is Bode Miller's home town! An American Olympian born and raised just down the snowy street from where we were staying! We expected there to be some revelers due to his Olympic wins, but mostly there were just a bunch of homemade signs. Like this one. Oh and a white board that said, 'Welcome to Bodeville, USA.' More like Welcome To The Threshold Of Hell.
Italian showers at the Dutch Treat - the town's bar and grille. Everyone was so surprised by the fare we ate there twice in one day! And the fact that we didn't really have a choice was hardly bothersome.

Faking high morale in the parking lot of Walmart. We bought this crazy battery for $100 that looked like a big red stereo from the 80's and pretty much ran off that for the next 12 hours. I want one for my own home. It was really useful. Like a power, water and heat.

Also, at Walmart - BB guns for under forty dollars! Sharp shooting ensued. We had an epic afternoon charging our new battery. Because we had to run the car to give it juice, we spent the afternoon in Phoebe's front yard waiting patiently for it to charge. There may or may not have been some mild tailgating as well.

Guess what we all learned this weekend?!?!

It hath no seasons! Seriously, I can barely think of a better afternoon and trip for that matter. Thank you no power, water, heat for providing us with such a good weekend!

Saturday, when the skiing party had left, Anne and I lay sourly in bed, both silently plotting our escapes. I kept rolling over and trying to fall back asleep thinking the longer I slept, the less I would suffer (btw - a good strategy for all stressful situations), when suddenly the house turned on with an electric surge! Anne shot up out of bed as if someone had pushed an eject button on the mattress and screamed, "POWER!" Historic breakfast sandwiches, showers and episodes of Celebrity Rehab on VH1 soon followed. Spared from a Donner Party ending!

Took a page out of the ladies night play book and indulged in this oldie-but-goodie.

How To Mix "The Deam"

If you order The Deam at a bar and you are given a blank look, supply the clueless bartender with the following instructions.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup whiskey of your choosing
2-4 ice cubes

Combine contents in measuring cup. For little deams, please do not exceed a serving of 1.5 cups. Family sized of 3 cups or more is for big deams only. Stir and sip. Ta da!

Beach Odyessy

Got caught doing the old one swipe/two people on the subway en route to catch the ferry. Would've made it except for the fact that the cops took their sweet time giving us each $100 tickets. Fuuuuuuuuuck.

Took the A to the S to the Q22 instead.

2 and a half hours later and the beach was a sight for sore eyes.

Caught the ferry on the way home though and what a perfect mode of transportation it was! We got the seat next to the sign that said "captains only," DUH. The ferry is only $6 bucks and takes you from Riis Landing to Wall Street in about 45 minutes. It gets a little crowded but we accidentally got there a half hour early so our seats were the best in the house (boat?). So far that ferry ride is the highlight of the summer. That and the human pyramid.

Once we passed the Verrazano bridge, two jet skiers picked up the American Princess's wake and played in waves behind us. One was a real Evel Knievel and the other was a little more conservative. He chose to just enjoy the ride behind the boat and was there to rescue the dare devil when he wiped out.

I LOVE BRIDGES!*

And look who else decided to go to the beach this weekend!
